Lighthouses are endlessly suggestive signifiers of both human isolation and our ultimate connectedness to each other (Virginia Woolf)

Lighthouses have always fascinated me. Maybe it’s because I see them as symbols of steadiness unaffected by whatever storm, waves, or howling rain hits them. They provide orientation for those who’re steering their ships along a treacherous coast. Their beams have been saving many sailors who chose to expose themselves to the forces of the ocean.

In 2012, I started capturing the lighthouses along the California coast. I like to photograph theses iconic buildings in a way that also highlights their context – you’ll never see one of my lighthouse images that doesn’t also contain the ocean.
